Krishna Janmashtami, also called Gokulashtami, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada. Krishna is adored in many forms, from the mischievous child Bal Gopal to the divine teacher of the Bhagavad Gita, and his worship brings joy, protection, love and prosperity into a household. Every celebration opens with a Ganesh Puja to ensure it proceeds smoothly.
The observance traditionally includes fasting through the day, decorating a cradle for the infant deity, and performing the main worship at midnight, the hour of Krishna's birth. The idol of Laddu Gopal is bathed in an abhishek of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar, dressed in fresh clothes, offered sweets and butter, and rocked gently in a decorated swing. Bhajans, the chanting of Krishna's names and aarti complete the celebration. Many homes pair the festivities with a Sundarkand Path for added devotion.
This puja is chosen by families and devotees who wish to invite Krishna's blessings for happiness, harmony in the home, success in endeavours, and deepening of devotion. It is equally meaningful for those who keep Laddu Gopal at home and wish to honour him with a full, traditional worship on his birthday. For protection and strength, devotees also keep up the Hanuman Chalisa Path.
Step 1: Sankalp and Preparation. The intention is set, and the worship space and cradle for the deity are prepared.
Step 2: Ganesh Puja. Lord Ganesha is invoked first to remove obstacles.
Step 3: Kalash Sthapana. A sacred Kalash is established for the worship.
Step 4: Krishna Abhishek. The idol of Laddu Gopal is bathed with Panchamrit of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar, then with clean water.
Step 5: Shringar and Offerings. The deity is dressed in fresh garments and ornaments and offered butter, sweets and bhog.
Step 6: Midnight Worship. The main puja is performed at midnight to mark the moment of Krishna's birth, with the deity placed in a decorated swing.
Step 7: Bhajan and Naam Jaap. Devotional songs and the chanting of Krishna's names fill the atmosphere.
Step 8: Aarti and Prasad. The celebration concludes with aarti and the distribution of prasad.
