Goddess Saraswati is the deity of vidya, or knowledge, and of speech, music, art and wisdom. She is depicted seated on a white lotus, holding the veena and the sacred texts, radiant in white as a symbol of purity and truth. Her worship is central to anyone whose path involves learning and creativity, which is why students, teachers, writers, musicians and artists hold her in special reverence. Learning traditionally begins with a Ganesh Puja to remove obstacles from the path of study.
Saraswati Puja is most famously observed on Vasant Panchami, the arrival of spring, which is considered the most auspicious day to begin education and creative pursuits. Many families perform Aksharabhyasa, the child's first introduction to writing, on this day. Books, musical instruments and tools of learning are placed before the goddess and worshipped rather than used, in acknowledgement that knowledge itself is sacred. Where a student's chart needs support, a Navagraha Japa strengthens the planets of intellect.
Beyond Vasant Panchami, this puja can be performed whenever a student faces exams, a creative person seeks inspiration, or a family wishes to bless a new phase of study. The worship invokes clarity of thought, retentive memory, eloquent speech and steady progress in learning. For focus and confidence in exams, the Hanuman Chalisa Path is a trusted companion.
Step 1: Muhurat and Sankalp. An auspicious time is chosen, ideally Vasant Panchami, and the intention is set.
Step 2: Ganesh Puja. Lord Ganesha is invoked to remove obstacles.
Step 3: Kalash Sthapana. A sacred Kalash is established near the image of the goddess.
Step 4: Saraswati Avahan. Goddess Saraswati is invited and seated with prayers and offerings.
Step 5: Shodashopachara Puja. The goddess is worshipped with the sixteen traditional offerings, including flowers, incense and white items.
Step 6: Worship of Books and Instruments. Books, pens and musical instruments are placed before the goddess and blessed.
Step 7: Saraswati Mantra Japa and Havan. The Saraswati mantra is chanted and a Havan seals the worship.
Step 8: Aarti and Prasad. The puja concludes with aarti and the sharing of prasad.
