In Vedic astrology the Sun, or Surya, is the king of the planets. It governs the soul, self-confidence, vitality, leadership, authority, the father figure, government connections and overall health. When the Sun is strong, a person carries natural presence, good health and the ability to lead. When it is weak, combust or afflicted, a person may struggle with low confidence, health issues connected to the heart, bones or eyes, obstacles in career and dealings with authority, and strained relations with the father or seniors. For overall balance, a Navagraha Japa supports the Sun alongside the other planets.
Surya Graha Shanti Jaap is performed to strengthen this vital planet. The Surya mantra is chanted in its traditional count, red and copper offerings associated with the Sun are used, and a Havan carries the prayers into the fire. Sunday and the hora of the Sun are considered especially favourable for this ritual. As Saturn is the Sun's karmic counterpart, the Shani Dosh Nivaran Puja is often recommended together with it.
This Jaap suits those facing career blocks, weak leadership presence, health concerns linked to the Sun, or difficulties in government-related work, examinations and public recognition. A Kundli Dosha Puja reading confirms how strong or weak the Sun truly is.
Step 1: Chart Analysis and Muhurat. The strength of the Sun is assessed and a Sunday or solar hora is chosen.
Step 2: Sankalp. The Jaap begins with your name, gotra and intention.
Step 3: Ganesh and Kalash Puja. Obstacles are cleared and divine presence is established.
Step 4: Navagraha Puja. The nine planets are honoured before focusing on Surya.
Step 5: Surya Mantra Japa. The Sun's mantra is chanted in the prescribed count with correct rhythm.
Step 6: Havan. Offerings associated with the Sun, including ghee and red items, are given into the sacred fire.
Step 7: Surya Arghya and Aarti. Water is offered to the Sun and aarti is performed.
Step 8: Blessings. The ritual concludes with Purnahuti and blessings dedicated to you.
