Lord Vishwakarma is revered as the divine engineer and architect, the creator of celestial palaces, weapons and vehicles of the gods. He is the presiding deity of all who build, craft and create, which includes engineers, mechanics, factory workers, artisans, architects, designers and industrial businesses. Vishwakarma Puja is their day of gratitude and blessing. As with any new undertaking, a Ganesh Puja is performed first to clear obstacles.
On this day, tools, machines, instruments and vehicles are cleaned and worshipped rather than used, in recognition of the skill and livelihood they provide. The ritual invokes Lord Vishwakarma for smooth functioning of equipment, safety of workers, freedom from breakdowns and accidents, and growth in output and prosperity. Many industries and workshops treat it as one of the most important observances of the year. For a new factory site, the Bhoomi Puja blesses the ground before work begins.
The puja is traditionally observed on Vishwakarma Jayanti, which usually falls in mid-September, though a workshop or business can also arrange it on another auspicious day suited to its operations. A Havan and aarti complete the worship, and prasad is shared among the workforce. When occupying a new unit, owners also arrange a Griha Pravesh Puja.
Step 1: Muhurat and Preparation. An auspicious time is fixed, ideally Vishwakarma Jayanti, and the workspace, tools and machines are cleaned.
Step 2: Sankalp. The ritual begins with the intention of the owner and workforce.
Step 3: Ganesh Puja. Lord Ganesha is invoked to remove obstacles.
Step 4: Kalash Sthapana. A sacred Kalash is established at the worship site.
Step 5: Vishwakarma Puja. An image or idol of Lord Vishwakarma is worshipped with flowers, incense and offerings.
Step 6: Worship of Tools and Machinery. The instruments, machines and vehicles are honoured and blessed.
Step 7: Havan. A sacred fire offering purifies the site and seals the blessings.
Step 8: Aarti and Prasad. The puja concludes with aarti and the sharing of prasad among all present.
