In Vedic astrology the sky is divided into 27 Nakshatras, and the Moon's placement at birth fixes a child's Janma Nakshatra. Six of these stars fall at the junction points ruled by Ketu and Mercury and are grouped together as Gand Mool Nakshatras: Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Moola and Revati. A baby born in one of these is said to carry Gand Mool Dosh.
The word Gand points to a knot or sensitive junction and Mool points to the root, so the dosh sits at an energetically delicate seam of the birth chart. Traditional texts advise that this dosh can create early-life health concerns, restlessness, and difficulties that may touch the parents and close family as well. The remedy prescribed by scriptures is the Gand Mool Nakshatra Shanti Puja. Because the dosh is tied to planetary rulership, families often pair it with a broader Navagraha Japa to balance all nine planets in the child's chart.
The ideal time to perform it is the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the same Nakshatra it occupied at the time of birth. If that window is missed, the ceremony can still be done later, preferably on the child's birth star day, within 27 months, or up to 27 years of age. This is a single lifetime ritual, and once completed correctly its protection is considered to last throughout life.
Step 1: Muhurat and Nakshatra Confirmation. Your child's exact Nakshatra and Pada are verified from the birth details, and the correct Muhurat is fixed, ideally the return of the birth star.
Step 2: Sankalp. The parents take a vow on behalf of the child, stating the intention of the Shanti for the little one's wellbeing.
Step 3: Gauri Ganesh and Kalash Sthapana. Lord Ganesha is invoked to clear obstacles, and a sacred Kalash is established, symbolically drawing water from 27 sources.
Step 4: Navagraha and 27 Nakshatra Puja. The nine planets and all 27 Nakshatras are worshipped to balance the wider celestial field around the child.
Step 5: Gand Mool Nakshatra Japa. The Pandit chants the specific Nakshatra mantra of the child's birth star, traditionally in thousands of recitations depending on the package.
Step 6: Mool Snan (Sanctified Bath). Water sanctified with leaves gathered from 27 plants is sprinkled over the baby and parents to cleanse the dosh.
Step 7: Havan. Offerings of ghee and sacred herbs are made to the ruling deity of the Nakshatra through the divine fire.
Step 8: Daan and Final Blessings. Grains, clothes and dakshina are offered as charity, and the Pandit blesses the child and family for a protected life.
